Toddler dies after accidentally being run over by her grandfather

PoliceNICOSIA village Paleometocho was yesterday plunged into mourning, after a pensioner accidentally ran over his 14-month-old granddaughter.

According to the police, 14-month-old Eleftheria Ioannou was being looked after by her grandparents when at a little after 9 am, she escaped her grandmother’s attention and went through the basement onto the road outside and sat on the ground behind her grandfather’s parked car.

Her grandfather then started up the car and reversed, running over the toddler. As soon as he realised what happened, he rushed his granddaughter with a neighbour to a private hospital, where doctors attempted for over three hours to save the little girl’s life. She passed away a little after noon.

Tractor driver 80, dies

PolicePaphos: A fatal accident which occurred yesterday whereby an 82 year old, George Evangelou, from Limassol died.

The accident happened between the hours of 2pm and 5pm on a rural road in the village of Mousere, Paphos, when a tractor driven by Evangelou drove off a cliff 40 meters deep and was fatally injured.

*** Σε θανατηφόρο δυστύχημα που συνέβη χθες στην επαρχία Πάφου έχασε τη ζωή του ο 82χρονος Γεώργιος Ευαγγέλου, από τη Δωρά Λεμεσού.
Το δυστύχημα συνέβη μεταξύ των ωρών 2μ.μ. και 5μ.μ. χθες, σε αγροτικό δρόμο, σε περιοχή του χωριού Μούσερε της επαρχίας Πάφου, όταν ο γεωργικός ελκυστήρας που οδηγούσε ο 82χρονος, κάτω από συνθήκες που διερευνώνται, κατέπεσε σε γκρεμό βάθους 40 μέτρων, με αποτέλεσμα ο Ευαγγέλου να τραυματιστεί θανάσιμα.
Ο 82χρονος μεταφέρθηκε με ασθενοφόρο στο Γενικό Νοσοκομείο Πάφου, όπου διαπιστώθηκε ο θάνατος του.
Η Τροχαία Πάφου σε συνεργασία με τον Αστυνομικό Σταθμό Κουκλιών διερευνά τα αίτια του δυστυχήματος.

Pensioner survives ten-metre car plunge

PoliceA 70-YEAR-OLD woman was lifted to safety by the Fire Service yesterday after driving over a cliff in the mountain regions yesterday.

In circumstances under investigation, Katerina Mandovanni drove over the cliff in the Spilia village area, landing with her car ten metres below.

According to senior fireman Leonidas Leonidou, the Fire Service received a distress call at 12.50pm. Vehicles from the Evrychou and central Nicosia station were sent to the scene immediately. On arrival, they found the woman outside of her car. Within 35 minutes, the 70-year-old was hoisted up on a spinal board and placed in the waiting ambulance.

She was taken to Nicosia General Hospital where she is being treated for facial injuries. No one else was in the car, said Leonidou

Pedstrian seriously injured

PoliceLimassol: Around 9.15 pm yesterday, there was a car collision on the Nick Pattichi Road Limassol, resulting in the serious injury of a 44 year old pedestrian.

The accident happened when a car being driven by a 21 year old struck the pedestrian as he tried to cross the street.

The pedestrian was transferred by ambulance to Limassol General Hospital where it was found to have suffered traumatic brain injury and fractures to the legs and hands. He was held for treatment in the Intensive Care Unit.

The state of his health is serious, but out of danger.

*** Γύρω στις 9.15μ.μ. χθες, σημειώθηκε τροχαίο δυστύχημα στην οδό Νίκου Παττίχη στη Λεμεσό, με αποτέλεσμα το σοβαρό τραυματισμό 44χρονης.
Το δυστύχημα συνέβη όταν αυτοκίνητο που οδηγούσε 21χρονος, κάτω από συνθήκες που διερευνώνται, παρέσυρε και τραυμάτισε την 44χρονη, η οποία εκείνη τη στιγμή διασταύρωνε το δρόμο.
Η 44χρονη μεταφέρθηκε με ασθενοφόρο στο Γενικό Νοσοκομείο Λεμεσού, όπου διαπιστώθηκε ότι υπέστη κρανιοεγκεφαλική κάκωση και κατάγματα στα πόδια και τα χέρια και κρατήθηκε για νοσηλεία στη Μονάδα Εντατικής Θεραπείας.
Η κατάσταση της υγείας της κρίνεται σοβαρή, αλλά εκτός κινδύνου.
Η Τροχαία Λεμεσού διερευνά τα αίτια του δυστυχήματος.

23 year old dies in another fatal collision

PoliceLarnaca: A 23 year old Romanian, Michael Blaes, was the victim of fatal road traffic collision which occurred yesterday around 7.10 pm in the evening on the Athienou – Avdellerou road.

A car left the road and travelled down a steep 8 meter drop before overturning and coming to rest.

A 22 year old passenger was injured and conveyed to Larnaca General Hospital where he was found to have suffered a fractured right hand and was detained for treatment.

*** 23χρονος αλλοδαπός, είναι το θύμα θανατηφόρου τροχαίου δυστυχήματος, που σημειώθηκε χθες βράδυ στο δρόμο Αθηένου – Αβδελλερού.
Το νέο θανατηφόρο τροχαίο, συνέβη γύρω στις 7.10 το βράδυ, όταν αυτοκίνητο που οδηγούσε ο 23χρονος, με συνοδηγό 22χρονο, επίσης αλλοδαπό, στον πιο πάνω δρόμο, κάτω από συνθήκες που διερευνώνται, παρεξέκλινε της πορείας του, με αποτέλεσμα να βγει εκτός δρόμου και να πέσει σε γκρεμό βάθους 8 περίπου μέτρων.
Από το δυστύχημα ο 23χρονος τραυματίστηκε θανάσιμα, ενώ ο 22χρονος μεταφέρθηκε με ασθενοφόρο στο Γενικό Νοσοκομείο Λάρνακας, όπου διαπιστώθηκε ότι υπέστη κάταγμα δεξιού χεριού και κρατήθηκε για νοσηλεία.
Η Τροχαία Λάρνακας διερευνά τα αίτια του δυστυχήματος.

Conscripts injured

PoliceLARNACA – Two 19-year old National Guard conscripts were seriously injured in two separate road accidents yesterday, the police have reported.
One of the accidents occurred at the Ayia Napa–Rizoelia junction and the other in Aradippou. Both victims were rushed to Larnaca General Hospital where they are receiving treatment.

Pedestrian killed on the highway

PoliceNicosia: A fatal collision, occurred last night on the highway between Nicosia and Limassol. The victim has so far been unidentified.

The collision occurred around 11 pm when a car being driven by a 77 year old struck a pedestrian, an unknown man aged 30 to 40 years, and dragged him along as he tried to cross the road.

The pedestrian was transferred by ambulance to Nicosia General Hospital, where a doctor certified death.

Traffic Police in Nicosia are investigating what caused the accident.

Το θανατηφόρο τροχαίο, συνέβη γύρω στις 11 το βράδυ, όταν αυτοκίνητο που οδηγούσε 77χρονος από τη Λευκωσία, κάτω από συνθήκες που διερευνώνται, σε κάποιο σημείο του πιο πάνω δρόμου, παρά την αερογέφυρα Καλαμών, παρέσυρε και τραυμάτισε άγνωστο άνδρα, ηλικίας 30 με 40 χρόνων περίπου, πιθανόν αλλοδαπό, ο οποίος τη στιγμή εκείνη προσπαθούσε να διασταυρώσει το δρόμο.

Ο πεζός μεταφέρθηκε με ασθενοφόρο στο Γενικό Νοσοκομείο Λευκωσίας, όπου ο επί καθήκοντι ιατρός διαπίστωσε το θάνατό του.

Η Τροχαία Λευκωσίας διερευνά τα αίτια του δυστυχήματος.

Cyclist injured

PoliceLARNACA – A 13-year-old cyclist is in serious condition after a car hit him late on  Thursday while trying to cross a pedestrian crossing.
Police said the boy was trying to cross the coastal town’s central Yiannos Kranidiotis Avenue when a car driven by a 24-year-old woman hit him.
He was first taken to Larnaca hospital but due to the seriousness of his condition he was transferred to Nicosia general hospital. He has serious head injuries.

PoliceAn 18-month-old baby girl was in serious condition yesterday after the pram she was in was struck by on oncoming car on a busy Limassol street.

The pram was being pushed by woman trying to cross the street.

The baby girl, who suffered a concussion and face injuries, was rushed to a private clinic where she has been kept for treatment. Doctors described her condition as serious but non-life threatening.

The 31-year-old driver of the car has been arrested and detained for questioning.

Road accidents down

BRUSSELS – The number of road accidents in Cyprus fell 28% in 2009 compared to 2001, according to figures released on Tuesday by the European Commission, which said that accidents on a European level dropped by 36%.

The Commission announced a new road safety plan with seven strategic aims to cut fatalities by 50% over the next ten years, and it will be cooperating closely with the member states to implement the plan.

Over the next 10 years, new rules will come into force requiring more vehicles to be equipped with automatic warning systems, including for speeding or leaving a lane and EU funding will only go to road-building projects that comply with EU road safety laws.

Pedal cyclist injured in collision

PoliceAbout 1745 yesterday a pedal cyclist was knocked from his bike by a truck while negotiating a roundabout in Kalou Village, Larnaca.

The rider, a 39 year old, sustained fractures and was taken to Larnaca General Hospital.

His condition is serious but not life threatening.

PoliceLarnaca:  Around 7.35m.m. yesterday, a car being driven by a 29 year old struck a 9 year old pedestrian who was crossing the road.

The boy was transferred to Larnaca General Hospital where he was detained for treatment.

Cyclist 16 hit parked car

PoliceAround 6.45 p.m. yesterday, a 16 year old pedal bike rider ran into a parked car in Museum of Diocese Street, Limassol.

The injured cyclist was initially taken by ambulance to Limassol General Hospital and then because of the gravity of the situation, it was necessary to transfer to Nicosia General Hospital, where he was detained.

83 year old car passenger dies

PoliceLarnaca:  Yesterday at 6 pm, a 55 year old was driving a car on the motorway in the direction of Claudius Kofinou.

The two passengers were an 83 year old and a  43 year old.

At some point the driver lost control of his vehicle so that left the road and crashed into some iron railings came to a halt.

This led to all the  occupants being  injured.  They were taken to Larnaca General Hospital.

The 83 year old died at 9:30 that night.

The driver suffered brain injuries and a fractured left collar bone while the other passenger suffered a traumatic brain injury.

The situation is serious but out of danger.

Driver trapped in car wreckage

PoliceNicosia:  Around 4:20 a.m. Sunday, a car being driven in Lythrodonta – Mathiatis street, by a 23 year old from a village in Nicosia, left the road and entered the courtyard of an adjacent house, where it crashed.

The 23 year old was trapped trapped in the wreckage of the vehicle and the fire brigade released him.

He was then taken by ambulance to Nicosia General Hospital, where he was detained for treatment. The injuries are described as serious.
