Police launch scheme to educate bikers

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

PolicePOLICE yesterday announced the introduction of a new programme to help combat the alarming number of deadly and serious motorbike accidents which have occurred on the island in recent years.

According to the figures presented yesterday at a news conference given by the Chief of Police Michael Papageorgiou, 271 motorbike riders and bike passengers have lost their lives in the past ten years.

Last month alone there were four motorbike deaths on the island’s roads,

The new programme launched yesterday is called Bikesafe and is based on a similar programme which is successfully running in the United Kingdom at the moment.

“The objective of the programme is to use specially trained members of the Traffic Police to train and educate young motorbike drivers, and all motorbike drivers which are in the high risk group of drivers.” Papageorgiou said. He continued by saying that an effort is being made to reduce the numbers of deaths and serious accidents which involved motorbikes.

According to further figures presented by Papageorgiou the 271 that lost their lives represents 27 per cent of the total number of traffic casualties in Cyprus. Furthermore he added that 65 per cent of the 271 dead were not wearing a protective helmet, and 50 per cent were under the age of 25.

The programme Bikesafe which was introduced by the Traffic Department Chief Demerits Demetriou, Lieutenant Harris Evripidou and the Chief of Police, will start next Saturday and take place every Saturday after that between 8am and 1pm at the Lecture Hall of the Park of Traffic Safety opposite the Police headquarters in Nicosia.

Demetriou and Evripidou explained that applicants for the programme need to fill out the relevant form and submit it to the email address bikesafe@police.gov.org or by fax to 22607092.

All applicants must hold a valid motorbike licence and arrive at the park with their own bike which should be in good condition with all the necessary paperwork in order.

In addition motorbike drivers need to bring their own safety equipment such as helmet, jacket, pants and gloves however they will not be required to pay any fee to take part, unlike the scheme in the UK, which costs 100 pounds sterling.

In addition Demetriou said that to motivate young motorbike drivers to take part, all persons successfully completing the course will be given a special certificate which could help them pay lower insurance fees, if specific insurance companies agree to the appeal by the police.

Bikesafe is a two part course. The first part is a theory course and consists of guidance in subjects such as, how to overtake, how to acknowledge possible dangers, group trips and awareness while on the road.

Following the theory course, successful applicants will undergo a practical test where the designated instructors will advise and evaluate them while driving on the open road.

Demetriou stressed that correct training was needed for young motorbike drivers in the attempt to lower the startling number of causalities.

He concluded that while the number of overall deaths on the road were decreasing yearly, the number of motorbike deaths remained constant between 21 and 36 every year. However he was confident that that by taking part in the programme, motorbike drivers would improve their ability and help them have more confidence on the road which in turn would allow them to enjoy their motorbike experience even more.

What the ancients never taught us about driving

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Royal Society for the Prevention Of AccidentsI HAD just skirted a roundabout anti-clockwise, crossed a pelican crossing at 62 kph and nearly missed my slip lane when Steve Tucker, my advanced driving instructor for the day, delivers his assessment.

“I’ve learnt a lot about your driving style already” he says cheerfully. “You are what we call a ‘reactive’ driver.”

On a sleepy Saturday afternoon in Paphos, a co-student and I had met with Tucker for an introduction to the advanced driving lessons, which are now offered free of charge in Cyprus.

Royal Society for the Prevention Of Accidents

More success!  Last week the Sales Manager of BMW Motorbikes Cyprus based in Nicosia and a gentleman from Larnaca passed their advanced riding tests and achieved Gold RoSPA Awards.  The weather on both days was horrendous, but they were serious bikers and were wrapped up well with their protective clothing and helmets to brave the elements.  But the wind…..very strong and weather is a hazard that has to be taken into consideration before any biker sets out, unlike a driver in the cocoon of their car with all the mod cons.  No misted up visors for them, side blasts and tumbleweed racing towards them to enwrap around you!!  All taken in their stride and yes, we enjoyed ourselves and we’ll all be doing ride outs together very soon.  And even better both of them are committed to becoming Tutors in their home towns.  Fantastic!

On the driving side Steve, one of the examiners went out with a reporter from the Cyprus Mail.  All I can say is look out for his article that will be apearing soon in the paper.  He had a wonderful time and didn’t really want to get out of the car at the end of the session, he was having so much fun and learnt so much.  Me thinks we have another convert here.  All good stuff.

The Master Driver of the British Army in Cyprus has taken his advanced driving test and proved himself worthy of a Gold Award.  He wants to become a Tutor and is keen to pass on his knowledge and experience to anyone else that is interested in becoming an advanced driver and is based in Episkopi.

What a great week it has been, long may it continue.

Steve

Are you really a good driver? – Cyprus Mail

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Royal Society for the Prevention Of AccidentsNo one leaves home with the intention of having an accident or killing someone else. In fact, there is no such thing as a road traffic ‘accident’. They are ‘collisions’ because there is a cause or reason for every one.

The Network celebrates 10 years of advanced driver training in Cyprus

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

It was 10 years ago this week when the first ‘Roadcraft’ theory lessons were given to a small group of students who had enrolled to improve their driving.

After some basic advice they were then let loose on the roads with an observer to put what they had learned into practice.   All those students later passed an advanced driving test.  The official press launch was at the Coral Beach Hotel a couple of weeks later.
